Louis
Baptiste Bartet, was
born in France. Immigration records for 1854 reveal the arrival
of a Louis B. Barthet from Bordeaux, France in the port of New Orleans
on a ship named "Denmark," on June 9, 1854. Given the
variety of ways I have seen the name Bartet mispelled and ... we
currently believe that Louis B. Barthet is Louis Baptiste Bartet.
Census
records for Iberville Parish in 1880 show that Baptiste was married
to Anni Breaux Bartet and had
two living children. Eliza, a six-year-old daughter and Louis
a nine-month-old son. Eliza is actually Mary Elizabeth
Bartet. According to an 1880 Iberville Parish census, Anni
Breaux Bartet was 36 and both her mother and father were born
in Louisiana.

Wade's father
was Alfred Courtade, the son of French immigrant Jean B. Courtade
who came to Louisiana in 1837. Jean B. Courtade Married his first
wife, Marthe Ernestine Hebert on November 28, 1839. Marthe
Ernestine Hebert was the daughter of Jean Baptiste Hebert and Amarant
Landry. They had four children: Adeline born 1841, Alfred on May
20, 1845, Louisa born 1848 and Ernestine born 1850. After Ernestine's
death in 1850, Jean B. Courtade is shown to be living in Trinity,
Louisiana, a small community in Cathoula Parish, near Jonesville.
Later, he is shown to be living in West Baton Rouge Parish
where he married Odile Bitancourt, widow of Alexandre O'Keefe on
December 30, 1861. They have a son, Arthur in 1863. Jean B. Courtade
and his wife Odile are absent from the 1870 census and Arthur is
living with his sister, thirty-year-old unmarried sister, Adaline,
in West Baton Rouge Parish.
Census records show that Andrew O'Keefe, now 16 and step-brother
to Adeline (son of Alexandre O'Keefe and Odile Betencourt) is also
living with Adaline. The 1880 census shows "Odele" living
in West Baton Rouge Parish and widowed. Arthur is living with her
and his older half brothers. Jean B. Courtade's son, Alfred
Courtade Julia Fine, daughter of William Fine and Helene Roquet
on October 27, 1870. Together they have four (4) children: Henry
Wade, Wallace, Louis and Helen. Mary
Elizabeth Bartet and
Henry Wade Courtade were
married on September 13, 1891.
Mary
Elizabeth Bartet Courtade and Henry Wade Courtade had seven (7)
children. The name "Courtade" is pronounced "Coo-Tard."
- 1.
Charles Eric Courtade,
born September 16, 1926.
- In
1900 Charles Eric Courtade was living in Cheneyville with his
mother's parents, Baptiste and Anni Breaux Bartet.
He is seven (7) at the time. The family of his future wife, Eunice
Robert live in the same community. This
would suggest that Charles Eric and Eunice Robert knew each other
as children. Later, while staying at his
uncle Louis Bartet, Sr's home, he married Eunice
Robert, Mary Tuzette Robert Bartet's younger sister. Charles
Eric Courtade, Sr and Eunice Robert had six (6) children, including
twins that died at birth. The four children
that lived were: 1) Audrey who married Sidney Landry; 2)
Nelwyn who married "Blackie" Bergeron, who
died in Lake Charles in 1942. Nelwyn remarried "Bootsy"
Thibodeaux. 3) Charles Eric, Jr. married Alieen
Fairburn; 4) Carolyn married Ervin Sterken and currently lives
in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. Carolyn

Robert died.

Mary
Tuzette Robert Bartet
was born to William
Slaughter ROBERT and his wife Eunice
Bailey in Cheneyville, Louisiana in 1882. In the
year of 1900 at the age of eighteen (18) Mary Tuzette Robert
married Louis Bartet, Sr.
According
to the1910 census in St John the Baptist Parish, Mary T. Bartet,
as she is listed, was 28 years old, had been married ten (10)
years and had three (3) children, all of whom were living. Only
two (2) children are listed in the 1910 census, which are Robert
Bartet and Louis Bartet, Jr (my father). The
third child would have been Alma Bartet. The census
lists Robert Bartet as being nine-years-old (9) and Louis
Bartet Jr. as being six-years-old (6). Robert
Bartet was born in 1901, Alma was born in 1903 and Louis
Bartet Jr. was born in 1904. This would mean that Alma
Bartet was seven (7) at the time of the 1910 cenus. The census taker
simply failed to list Alma's name.
In
a 1920 St. John The Baptist Parish census, Mary Tuzette Robert
Bartet is listed as being thirty-seven (37) and Louis Bartet,
Sr is listed as being forty-one (41). At that time they had
nine (9) children, the census only lists eight (8) children as living
with their parents.
- 1.
Robert Bartet, their oldest child and son had already left
home.
- 2.
Alma Bartet was seventeen (17).
- 3.
Louis Jr. was fifteen (15).
- 4.
Helen was eight (8).
- 5.
Dorris was seven (7).
- 6.
Hubert Preston was six (6).
- 7.
Eunice was four (4).
- 8.
Elizabeth, Eunice's twin, was also four (4).
- 9.
Laverne was seven (7) months old.
According
to my father, Louis Bartet, Jr, his mother, Mary Tuzette
Robert Bartet died when he was sixteen-years-old (16), approximately
one year after the 1920 census mentioned above.
